Cooking Is As Simple As Following Directions

No matter who you are cooking for, even if it's simply your family, you will benefit from learning new things. Using the proper techniques can change an ordinary meal into a fabulous event that will be well-remembered. Try some of these tips to make your meals interesting and exciting!

Exposure to air can turn many fresh fruits brown when they are sliced, including apples, bananas, avocados, pears and peaches. You can stop the browning by brushing them with lemon or salt water but pineapple juice is recommended because it will not adversely affect the taste. As a rapid dip will suffice, you don't need to immerse the fruit.

To make slicing meat into thin strips a little easier, partially freeze it. This technique is especially useful for the meat slicing styles typically used in Asian cuisine. When the meat is partially frozen, cutting becomes cleaner as the meat fibers are less likely to tear or stretch. However, be sure to allow the meat strips to thaw before cooking them, for even cooking.

When creating soup and stew, try making it lower in fat content by using stocks that have the fat already removed from them. Also use lean meat and lots of vegetables; this will keep your soup low-fat. As soon as the soup is done cooking, put it in the refrigerator to chill. When the soup is cooled, you will find that the fat will have risen and congealed on top. This will make it easy to remove and discard the hardened fat. For each tablespoon of fat that you remove, you will have removed approximately 100 calories.

Sharp knives are a kitchen necessity. You are more likely to injure yourself using a dull knife. It is more likely that you will cut yourself while trying to get a dull knife to cut something than when you use a well-sharpened knife.

When you store things like flour, baking mixes and sugar, you should use containers that are airtight. Keeping your food in sealed containers will keep them fresher longer as the air can't reach them. Almost every store has some form of them, and they are usually inexpensive.

Be sure to refresh your spices every few months. If you keep them longer than this, they may lose their flavor. If you don't use a spice very often, and it will go bad before you have to replace it, give some to family and friends.

Before preparing any sort of dish, you must ensure that your utensils are clean. Bits of food on your utensils could contaminate the dish you are cooking. This can cost you a lot because it might cause bacteria to spread.

If you really like to use a lot of herbs and spices, you need to keep them in a dark and cool place so they can retain their freshness and flavor. Storing spices and herbs in cabinets above the stove or in other warmer locations will result in a loss of flavor and a loss of money.

A great way to use random vegetables in your refrigerator is to make some fried rice. Using day-old cool rice is best, however, if you have to make it fresh, make the rice drier by cutting down on the water a bit. Just add your meat of choice to a large pan or wok, then throw in the veggies followed by the rice and some seasonings. In no time you'll have a meal.

Incorporate different colors into the the dishes you make. You will increase the visual appeal of your dishes and vary the beneficial nutrients found in different colored foods. Use colorful garnishes like parsley, carrot curls, or raw cherry tomatoes. Have fun with colorful food, and the food you serve will eaten right up.

Take care to not overfill your pan when you are sauteing. Too much moisture can cause food to steam rather than saute, affecting the crispness of the meal. Saute at a lower temperature as well.

As you are preparing mashed potatoes for a meal, be sure to use hot, but not boiling milk to stir in with the potatoes. The end result is lighter, fluffier mashed potatoes. Nobody wants to eat mashed potatoes full of lumps.

These little bits of advice can go a long way toward improving your kitchen creations. Take a shot at each suggestion at least once. With practice, you will be able to incorporate these ideas into your cooking, improving your technique. You'll become much better at cooking in a short amount of time when you apply these tips in your kitchen.
