Cooking is something that is necessary in life, but you can also make it a fun and delicious hobby. With proper advice and knowledge, anyone can learn how to cook. There is lots of advice and information here in this article.

When you need to prepare a salad to serve later, place the layers in the bowl thoughtfully. Using an appropriate dish, put watery items, such as tomatoes or cucumbers, on the bottom, then arrange more delicate ingredients, like lettuce, on top.

Do you have trouble deciding how long to grill your meat? A well-manufactured meat thermometer, especially a precision digital model, is always a sound method of seeing to it that the inside of your meat is cooked thoroughly. You should close the grill lid when you are cooking meat that is 1.5 inches thick or thicker to cut down on the grilling time.

To prevent waste of leftovers, take all of your veggies and meat that is in your refrigerator, and make a stir fry with some rice. Day old rice works best, but fresh will be fine too if you reduce the water a bit to make it drier. Fry your vegetables and meat in some oil. Once you've done this, add rice and any seasoning you want with garlic, ginger, soy sauce and other spices.

Many veggies and herbs leave strong scents and plant oils on your cutting board that are very difficult to remove completely. Get two different cutting boards or mark one side of your board and make sure you use it for certain ingredients only.

If you are making a salad ahead of time, put some thought into how you layer its ingredients. Tomatoes and other juicy ingredients should be on the bottom layer and lettuce along with any other ingredients which might wilt or get soggy should be on the top.

Save time and money by freezing leftover sauce in ice cube trays in the freezer. You can easily take them from the freezer when needed for a meal, and quickly reheat in a saute pan. Nothing to worry about as the sauce will be fine even after it's been sitting in ice cube trays.

To prepare a pumpkin for baking, you should first prop up the pumpkin so that it is upright. Next, use a large knife to bisect it evenly. Put each half, cut side down, on a separate baking sheet. Put a little water on the sheet and then bake the pumpkin halves for about an hour at 350 degrees.

Do not dress your guests' salads. Serve the dressing on the side and allow your guests to dress it to their liking. Some people enjoy lots of dressing when eating salads so it is important that each person add their own dressing. Make sure you have a selection to choose from.

If you have sauce left over after a meal, store the remainder in one or more ice cube trays and let it freeze. When you do this, making a quick meal can be accomplished by simply reheating by using a saute pan. The frozen sauce will keep extremely well until the next time you need it!

Although garlic is a great flavor booster that compliments a wide variety of foods, it can unfortunately stick to your hands. After you have finished doing your prep work with the garlic, run your hands along the stainless steel interior of your sink. While ridding your hands of the garlic odor, it will also have the added benefit of preventing its transfer to other foods, as you cook.

Reference your recipe to ensure you have the correct potatoes. Potatoes are designated into groups: all-purpose, waxy or mealy. Mealy potatoes have a dry, crumbly texture and are perfect for mashing. The russet potato is one of the most common of the mealy variety. For a general use potato, you can't do better than the Yukon gold variety. Waxy potatoes can maintain their shape extremely well. Because of this fact, they are excellent for steaming or boiling. Plain red and white potatoes are typical waxy potatoes.

Spices should be kept somewhere cool and dark. Your spices will not last as long if they are exposed to light, heat or humidity. If you store your spices in dark place with relatively low temperatures like a pantry, the spices will retain their taste and take longer to spoil. Your culinary preparations will taste better if your spices are fresh.

Fresh ways to prepare oysters. Oysters are normally eater raw with a drop of lemon, but there are other methods of preparation. Place oysters that have already been opened in a broiler pan. Cover them with a small amount of cream. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and some freshly grated pepper, and the broil until they are bubbling. You could try to saute them. To saute oysters, dredge oysters through seasoned flour and place in a pan of hot butter and fry for a couple of minutes until golden brown. Always bake the oysters while they are still within their shells. Use a casserole dish to bake the oysters. Then, dab a bit of butter along with some fresh breadcrumbs on top of each oyster. Set the oven to bake for 5 minutes at 425 degrees. Whenever the butter begins to bubble, you are ready to serve them along side some toasted bread.

When making a meal that needs milk or water, try a different substitute to make the dish taste different. Juices, beef broth, or vegetable broth can all be used as a substitute for water. Buttermilk, yogurt and sour cream can be great substitutes for milk. Using different liquids is an easy way to make an old dish more interesting and more nutritious.

To make potato skins or twice baked potatoes, use baking potatoes for a firm shell. You cannot use red potatoes because their skin is too thin to hold up to a dense filling.

Fix your pie crust. Sometimes when you're rolling out pie dough it will end up with places that are showing cracks. Sprinkle a little water on the crack, then use your index finger to rub the dough together. Ripping or tearing of the top crust can be more difficult to repair, but can be easy to hide by covering the crust in little brushed-on milk or beaten egg white, and then lightly coating with sugar before placing the pie in the oven. When the pie is done, it will have a wonderful glaze and rich brown top that will disguise any cracks.

High quality cutlery and knives are worth the expense. You will be more efficient when you do not have to deal with dull knives; in addition, sharp knives are safer to use than dull knives. Dull blades are the cause of more accidents than sharp blades.

A good piece of advice you can observe when cooking with oil is to pour it down the sides of the hot pan. When the oil reaches the food in the middle, it will already be hot. This will give your food the highest level of flavor.

This way, your fruit will last for a longer period time. You'll also be able to enjoy fruits out of season when the mood strikes you.
